Today we are going to be observing the new class logo that was created by Wei Lin. This logo was chosen because it uses the school logo, the eagle, and interprets it in an anime STYLE.
Observe Wei Lin's drawing technique. The lines that form the eagle are collections of lines. The lines is rigid, bold and jagged. The end result is a tough looking eagle. The lines are not graceful but powerful. Wei Lin has a determination in his drawing practice that should be mimicked. He is doing well in class. The determination shows through in Wei Lin's work to the point Wei Lin's actual personality is expressed abstractly through the drawing.
Each one of you has a unique hand.
Because each one of your hands are slightly different, your styles will differ drastically. We have gone over this in previous blog posts.
One of my main concerns in this class is when students are worried that their work will not look EXACTLY like an anime character. You must learn that the goal of drawing is NOT to be able to imitate exactly the drawing style that you see on television, but to develop your OWN PERSONAL STYLE. Once you have developed your own personal style of drawing, which takes years, then and only then will you have the ability to imitate the works of others.
Furthermore, the most successful artists, cartoonists and anime artists are the creative minds that present a new character, style or idea to the world, not the people who copycat the characters and styles of others.
Here I will demonstrate how by simply changing the STYLE of the font, what is expressed in the logo changes drastically.
The name of the first font is - ROSEWOOD. Rosewood is a type of wood that was used often in the ol' west. This font is reminiscent to Wanted posters, circus flyers, etc. When I change the STYLE of the Font from Wei Lin's hand to the Rosewood font, how does it change the picture and your thoughts about it?
The second font is entitled Edwardian. When we change the font to Edwardian, how does it change the picture?
The third font is called SCHOOLHOUSE. How does this font change the logo?
You should be thinking of two seperate ideas when you are drawing; not only what is being drawn, but HOW it is being drawn. Do you have quickly? Do you take your time? You'd be amazed at what people can "read" not only by what is being drawn, but how it is drawn.
Today's assignment: Observe Wei Lin's eagle. I'd like you all draw the new class logo. I'd like you to draw it in YOUR style. Once it is completed, observe how you have drawn the logo and write one page about how your style is different from the chosen school logo. Is your hand careful? Do you draw energetically?
If you finish early, please come to the front of the desk to be shown the second assignment of the day.
